CRABBING
HOW TO CRAB
The easiest way to crab is to use a drop line or trap with bait. The most popular bait is bunker, which is available in our bait shop. When you fell a tug on the line, pull it up and lift the crab with your net. We offer rowboats with or without engines. The advantage of a rowboat is multiple lines can be dropped. Rowboats rentals with engines require id.
HOW TO HANDLE CRABS
The easiest way to keep your crabs is in a bushel basket. Keep it as cool as possible.
We have bushel baskets and ice in our bait shop
NEW JERSEY CRAB REGULATIONS
You need to distinguish between male and female crabs. The blue claw male has blue claws and the females have red claws. If you turn crab upside down to see the abdomen, the male crab has an inverted “T” while the female’s has a triangular shape. New Jersey prohibits the removal of female crabs from its waters. The minimum size crab must be 4½ inches from point to point. Specific regulations are available from the Fish, and Wildlife Digest: Marine Edition.
HOW TO COOK BLUE CLAW CRABS
Rinse crabs in fresh water, making sure they are alive. Drop crabs in a pot of boiling water for 8 to 10 minutes. If you want a spicy flavor add “old bay seasoning” to the pot. The shells will turn bright red, and then let them cool. If you want extra juicy crabs, boil them in beer.
